SEO for Small Businesses: Get Found Online

Apr 9, 2024 | Marketing, Websites

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can feel overwhelming, but it’s really about making your small business website attractive to both search engines and potential customers.

Here’s a basic guide to get you started:

1. Keyword Magic: Understanding What People Search For

  • Brainstorm terms related to your business and what customers might search for
  • Use free or paid keyword research tools to discover search volume and competition level for these terms
  • Focus on long-tail keywords (more specific phrases) to target a niche audience- such as web design Pittsburgh versus web design

2. Content is King: Create Valuable and Engaging Information

  • Create high-quality content that solves problems, answers questions, and informs your target audience
  • Regularly update your website with this fresh content using blog posts, service pages, FAQ’s, and infographics
  • Optimize your content with your target keywords, but naturally – don’t stuff keywords in!

3.  Technical SEO:  Website Health Check-Up

  • Ensure your website is mobile-friendly, with fast loading times
  • Set up a Google Search Console account to identify technical SEO issues
  • Make sure your website has a secure connection (HTTPS)
  • If you are a current client website hosting of mine- you don’t have to worry about these, I’ve got you covered!

4. Local SEO: Dominate Your Neighborhood

  • Claim and optimize your Google Business Profile- this is one of the most neglected aspects of SEO! Don’t forget to regularly update this with services, updates, and events.
  • Get listed in relevant online directories with consistent business information – name, address, phone number
  • Encourage customer reviews on Google and other platforms

5. Link Love: Building Credibility

  • Backlinks (when other websites link to yours) are like votes of confidence for search engines- a great place to start is any local networking or business association like a Chamber of Commerce listing
  • Create high-quality content that other websites will naturally want to link to
  • Partner with local businesses or relevant websites for guest blogging opportunities

Bonus Tip: Track Your Progress

  • Use Google Analytics to monitor website traffic and see what’s working (and what’s not) with your SEO efforts
  • Keep up with the latest SEO trends to stay ahead of the curve

Remember: SEO is a marathon, not a sprint. Be patient, consistent, and focus on creating a valuable user experience. By following these steps, you’ll be well on your way to getting your small business noticed online!
